The daughter was Annabell(a?) Garcia who, at the time, was a trained puppeteer. She helped design that giant skeleton on the '90 summer tour for instance and was involved with the "Touch of Grey" video. You can also see her in the Q&A session on Ticket to New Year's '87.

If I remember correctly as she said that quote she also said, in the same breath, that he had paid for all the children's educations and was grateful for that and the lifestyle he gave them. And she obviously loved the man very much. I do not doubt, despite his shortcomings, that he loved them.

I hate it when things are taken out of context.

Hey Syd! Great to see you--it's been a long time, months even...hope all is well.

Hi William!

Yes, I keep meaning to see what's happening here but I get caught up with other things. I haven't lost the faith---I saw the boys in April in Buffalo which is around the last time I visited here. I do lurk and occasionally stream shows but I haven't felt like contributing much. I am writing about music in general for a Group on facebook. The variety and breadth of styles and genres and eras captivated me---but I have mentioned the Dead several times. The founder of the Group even selected "Morning Dew" as a song choice early on. What I like about the Group is its civility and mutual respect for other people's taste in music---sometime things on this site got a little too heated and downright nasty. I don't need that kind of climate in my virtual world when I can get it in my real one. And I noted that it drove away some of the regulars from this site and that truly saddened me. But I'll be around. I'm going to be checking in more often and if something crops up like it did this time (Annabella quoted out of context!), I'll weigh in.

I did purchase the Egypt album as well as that recent Terrapin '77 release. Thinking seriously about the Winterland box even though I have some of it already. Just looks like a nice package.

Still not downloading anything though. Just can't be bothered more than anything at this point. Even though there are some things they've made available themselves I'd like to get.

Knowing you to be a 60's man, if you want to recommend something feel free. I love that era too.

syd

Cool--thanks for the update, Syd...sounds like you're enjoying alternative outlets, and I understand how this place can be a bit "off" at times...I have found that having established such close relationships (I know it sounds strange, but...) here, even with folks with dramatically different outlooks on life (ie, we probably wouldn't have met in the "real" world) has its very real rewards for me...this is the only place I come to on the web (except for lurking at Hook) and love the interplay that is only possible with our knowledge of one another. And, believe it or not, it's great fun working on "big" nondead issues like war and peace, liberal and conservative, politics and ethics, etc., with the folks here...helps refine my own outlook to articulate responses, consider theirs, and so on.

Always a pleasure to hear from you.

Hey, it wasn't the diversity of views, political or othrwise---I love that. It was the venality and rudeness of some people who aren't really what I would have called bona fide members of this site. Hell, one of my favorite contributors was a dyed in the wool Republican (or Libertarian anyway) Cosmic Charlie. Is he still about?

I just didn't like the insults. People feel free to behave in the most appalling ways on line. But I do miss here and I will be here more frequently in future.

Cheers!

Oh I understood completely--I was just splain'n my own continued interest in the place. It has expanded considerably along these lines the last year or so, but only possible with long term relationships is what I was getting at (ie, it's context dependent). It also makes the aholes easier to ignore with lots of regulars between you and them...I guess it also is why I always talk like this: the more of folks like you around, the better the place. But, this wasn't meant to be a recruitment seminar--they just always seem to end up sounding like them!
